Holzkirchen – In exciting stories, the Isar detectives explain the principles of democracy to children. The initiator is Ilse Aigner, President of the State Parliament, who personally handed over the books to libraries in the Miesbach district.

"You can't start early enough with civic education," says Ilse Aigner, President of the State Parliament. But it has to be child-friendly, in the form of a colorfully illustrated, exciting story, for example. All this is connected by the "Isar detectives", whom Aigner recently brought personally to the libraries in the district.

Four friends lead through the state parliament

The four friends Elias, Metti, Flo and Balu experience exciting adventures as the "Isar detectives" in three books, with which young readers from nine to twelve years of age are to be introduced to the topics of politics and democracy in a playful way. For example, the first volume, "False Alarm", is about an art theft in the Bavarian state parliament that guides readers through the Maximilianeum. Part two deals with the right to petition and the Children's Commission is the subject of volume three. "Democracy is complicated, it's about compromises," says the president of the state parliament, who is worried about "currents against democracy".

Role model from Hamburg

The idea is not completely new, the role model, the Alster detectives, comes from Hamburg. "I was immediately hooked," says Aigner, who is the initiator for her colleagues on the Isar. She and author Anja Janotta give each other keywords from which the stories are created, illustrator is Stefan Leuchtenberg. A fourth volume is already planned. It will deal with the topic of "elections". However, the publication date will not be nationwide on Reading Day in November, as has been the case so far, as it is so close to the state election on Sunday, October 8, Aigner explained. That is why the Day of the Book on April 23 was chosen.

"It's great that knowledge is imparted here with a detective story," says Holzkirchen's community library director Ute Knopp. There and in the other libraries of the district, the President of the State Parliament, Ilse Aigner, recently brought the trilogy personally. Schools that would like to let the Isar detectives go in search of clues in the classroom can receive a class set from the Bavarian State Parliament. "In the field of political education, there is little for young people that is so exciting," says Holzkirchen's mayor Christoph Schmid.
