The Southern District Prosecutor's Office said today (Sunday) that an indictment has been filed in the Eilat District Court against Violet Biton, a 47-year-old resident of the city, after she accidentally started a fire that destroyed more than 10 dunams of open fields. This was after she tried to set some personal documents on fire.
In December 2021, Biton, who was living in Mevaseret Zion at the time, arrived late in the evening at the woods near her home to burn some documents in her possession. After she set the papers on fire, they began to fly out of her hands towards the nearby vegetation - causing her to catch fire. Bitton's attempts to control the fire were fruitless - the fire only spread and throughout the night burned the wide fields, and caused minor damage to the yard of a nearby house.
The indictment, filed by attorney Wasim Abu Amer, attributes to Bitton the offense of causing a fire by negligence.

On Friday, a wave of fires broke out across the country, due to the heavy heat that prevailed. The fire authority reported that about 300 fires broke out in open areas throughout the country. Only after about 12 hours of fires throughout the country was all fires in the open areas declared.
Earlier this week, fire and rescue fighters rescued nine puppies from a forest fire near Al Hilal Hospital in Jerusalem's Mount of Olives neighborhood. The fighters trying to extinguish the large fire heard the faint howls of dogs coming from the fire, and located them trapped in the fire in smoke, seconds before the fire approached them.
