On holiday in Mallorca, young tourists in particular are always making a fool of themselves. At "balconing". There is a hail of complaints, a hotel manager explains the problem.

Palma de Mallorca – Humans are descended from apes. Both are primates, have a common ancestor, and the DNA is almost completely identical in some cases.

When climbing, however, the monkeys clearly have the point. Humans, on the other hand, usually feel more comfortable on the floor. But also test his skills in the situations above from time to time.

It is precisely this way of making a fool of yourself that is causing trouble in Mallorca this holiday season. As the newspaper Ultima Hora reports, there was a hail of complaints from residents who had to watch as German holidaymakers jumped from balcony to balcony in a hotel or climbed around the parapets. Among connoisseurs, this is called "balconing", because it is not a really new phenomenon. And it's a punishable offense.

Hotel manager on balconing: "Young people want holidays with partying, fun and alcohol"

Juan Manuel Ordinas, director of the Hotel Teide in Arenal, has his say in the newspaper. The party stronghold, where the Ballermann in particular attracts young and drink-happy holidaymakers. He can understand the discomfort of neighbors and residents and apologizes for the inconvenience, said the hotel manager: "But we have to be realistic and understand that we have a hotel full of young people who come to have a good time, to enjoy a holiday of party, fun and alcohol."

However, he also emphasizes that there are limits: "In this hotel we apply the tourism law enacted by the government, and all guests sign a form at the entrance informing them that they will be expelled from the hotel if they make balcony jumps or behave rudely." Hotel guests have already been kicked out for this reason.

At night, therefore, a security guard is on duty. In addition, the staff would keep a special eye on such activities. At the same time, according to the report, the hotel management acknowledged an incident last year when drunken tourists jumped onto a neighbor's terrace to sit on the sofa and have beer. The police would have intervened and the matter would have been clarified.

Balconing on holiday in Mallorca: newspaper provides photos as evidence

Mallorca Magazine, a German-language sister newspaper, provided evidence of another case. It shows a person wearing a yellow hat and patterned shorts and matching top, climbing over a balustrade from one balcony to the other, but this doesn't seem to be a real challenge in this case. Another photo shows a group and at best hints at an excess.

Accordingly, the neighbors assume that the balcony climbers are drunk and may be under the influence of drugs. And they don't care if there are complaints about their behavior. It is feared that the tourists could fall down in exuberance.

In 2018, several deaths related to "balconing" had even made headlines. At that time, for example, a 23-year-old German fell from the twelfth floor and could not be saved. There was talk of tests of courage.

How does Hotel react to balconing? Director would put guests on the street

Since then, the daring balcony actions have repeatedly made headlines. As the Mallorca Zeitung reported last year in connection with the arrest of three young Dutch men, such excesses can be punished with fines of between 6,000 and 60,000 euros.

In addition to Playa de Palma, the party stronghold of Magaluf, which is particularly popular with the British, also has many cases of "balconing". There have been several deaths there in the past year.

Ordinas also mentions his dilemma in Mallorca Magazine: Often he would only learn about the incidents afterwards, when the guests had already left. Otherwise, he would put the troublemakers on the street with the help of the local police, and they would not see their overnight allowance again. However, it is then possible for the uninvited guests to stay in another hotel. Because this is not prevented by the law. (mg)
