Fight against cancer: New blood test to enable faster diagnoses

2023-06-04T14:30:53.340Z

Highlights: New blood test is said to be able to detect over 50 different types of cancer. Test shows tiny fragments of tumor DNA in the blood and is still under development. The UK's NHS is currently taking a close look at the Galleri test in further investigations with thousands of people. The aim is to find out whether the test also detects cancers that cause no symptoms or symptoms that appear late. According to ntv, these results will be published later this year. The test was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Oncology.

Possibly a lifesaver: A new blood test is said to be able to detect over 50 different types of cancer. In this way, cancer can be identified at an early stage.

Frankfurt – The earlier cancer is detected, the better the treatment. But check-ups are often time-consuming and unpleasant. And here, too, not all cancer findings are always detected. But that may change now: A blood test gives hope for easier diagnosis and early detection.

More than fifty types of cancer are said to be detected by the Galleri test from Grail Inc. This was the result of the Symplify study by Oxford University, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Oncology in Chicago. The test is said to be able to show tiny fragments of tumor DNA in the blood and is currently still under development.

Cancer diagnosis: blood test proves itself

The Symplify study involved 5,461 people in England and Wales. They had all been referred to the hospital with suspected cancer. The test was able to detect two-thirds of the cancers within the study. In doing so, he not only showed whether a disease was present, but was also able to show where the cancer focus is located in 85 percent of the positive cases.

Especially in elderly patients suffering from advanced disease, the test was precise. Cancers associated with symptoms of a tumor in the upper gastrointestinal tract were best detected or ruled out.

Blood test as a new opportunity in cancer detection

Although further examinations are necessary for approval, in the future the blood test could offer the opportunity to facilitate and accelerate a diagnosis. Those who suffer from symptoms could be calmed down more quickly if there is no cancer. "This could lead to earlier cancer diagnosis or faster certainty for people without cancer," Dr. Richard Lee of the Institute of Cancer Research told The Guardian.

The UK's NHS is currently taking a close look at the Galleri test in further investigations with thousands of people. The aim is to find out whether the test also detects cancers that cause no symptoms or symptoms that appear late. According to ntv, these results will be published this year.
