The government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced a drop in the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas, which weigh heavily on household budgets. This gift was made possible by the new pricing policy of the state oil giant Petrobras, announced with great fanfare a few days ago.
Struggling to get his reforms through Congress and show concrete changes to Brazilians since taking office on January 1, Lula has chosen to pursue an interventionist policy in the strategic energy sector against the tide of his predecessors, the conservative Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro. During the election campaign, the 77-year-old former trade unionist promised that he would "Brazilize" fuel prices, decoupling them from the international market.
