MK Simcha Rothman, one of the leaders of the legal reform, responded on Twitter to the incident in which he snatched a megaphone from the hands of a protester in New York. "A small group of violent protesters attacked me and my wife as we were walking late at night in New York, they blocked our way, stepped on my wife's leg and cursed, including death wishes," Rothman said.
Rothman is currently in New York for a march marking the 75th anniversary of the State of Israel. Last Friday night in the United States (light Saturday in Israel), Rothman was walking with his wife in New York accompanied by security guards, when a group of anti-reform demonstrators accompanied him in a noisy protest as he made his way on foot all the way to his hotel.

According to Rothman's description of the incident: "The security guards called the police, we described to them where we were, and we kept walking, ignoring the demonstrators. At some point, the demonstrators realized that we weren't excited about them, and then they held a megaphone to our ear and shouted.
Both the security guards and I kept telling them to stop and move away, and they continued. After all the warnings, I took the megaphone she pushed into my ear without touching it, of course. After about half a block, we got to a place where we could go in and wait for the police. The police escorted me to the hotel, and the incident was over."
According to Rothman, "The violent attackers came from Israel. Just as in Israel they represent a small and violent group, so too here. It is permissible to demonstrate, it is forbidden to physically assault and harass Knesset members." The Knesset member criticized the opposition members, saying that "the fact that Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz do not condemn the violent attacks on Knesset members, and even encourage them, proves more than anything else that they have become an opposition to the state."
Leaders of the resistance to the dictatorship responded to Rothman: "We remind Rotman that although he wants to return Israel to the Middle Ages, we are living in 2023, a year in which everything is filmed. There is not a single word of truth in his detached text, victim-blaming and wild incitement that unfortunately leads to violence against protesters.
"This is a pathological liar, a violent dictator, so let us remind Rothman, wherever he goes, good Israelis and democracy-loving people will come to protest against the coup attempt he is leading."
