On Tuesday night, the native of Graz died surrounded by his family at home in Vienna (Austria), the Vienna Burgtheater announced. Initially, nothing is officially known about the cause of death. Peter Simonischek is said to have apparently died of cancer. This is reported by the Salzburger Nachrichten. In the city of Salzburg, posters with his face are still hanging, which advertise a small appearance on June 9. That is no longer the case.
For several months, rumors about a possible cancer have been increasing, according to Austrian media. The cancer should have been diagnosed in mid-2022, it is said. Apparently, the disease was already well advanced. The Burgschauspieler presented his film "The Measured Man" at the Berlinale in February. On New Year's Eve he was still on stage at the Vienna State Opera as prison guard Frosch in "Die Fledermaus". Now the film and theatre world is mourning the loss of a legend.

Peter Simonischek played "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival from 2002 to 2009. Since 1999 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater. Prior to that, he was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin Schaubühne for 20 years, starting in 1979. In addition to the theater, the native of Graz also made a career in TV and cinema. In small roles in "Tatort", "Bella Bock" and "Der Alte" Simonischek was seen.
The tragicomedy "Toni Erdmann" makes Peter Simonischek internationally famous. With a weird set of teeth and weird jokes, the actor drives his ambitious daughter (Sandra Hüller) crazy as an aging music teacher. "Toni Erdmann" by Mare Ade was even nominated for an Oscar in 2017. Simonischek received the European Film Award (2016) as Best Actor for his role – the first Austrian actor.
