The death of a 19-year-old in Sauerlach near Munich kept the region in suspense. Now the police conducted a survey of residents to gain further insights.

Sauerlach - Large-scale police operation in Sauerlach: On Saturday afternoon, the Munich police conducted a large-scale survey of residents. The action lasted about three hours, shortly after 16 p.m. it was over. The background for the not insignificant effort was the deadly drama that had taken place exactly one week ago, on May 27: A 19-year-old woman from Erding had been stabbed to death by her 22-year-old boyfriend in broad daylight, on a dirt road on the eastern outskirts of the municipality.

According to police, she was killed with a pocket knife that had an eight-centimeter-long blade. The cause of death was numerous stitches and cuts in the upper body. The perpetrator had then tried to take his own life, he succumbed to his injuries the same evening in a Munich hospital. According to police, the woman had been visiting relatives in Sauerlach.

Sauerlach: After the death of a 19-year-old - police want to better understand the background and motive for the crime

Especially in the residential area not far from the scene of the crime, in the Kornblumen and Reißerweg, a good 30 officers, moved in four group vehicles, were now on duty on Saturday. They went door-to-door and interviewed numerous residents and recorded the statements. Interviews also took place on the station square, where numerous Sauerlachers were eating ice cream in summer temperatures: According to previously unconfirmed rumors, the couple is said to have attracted attention here in front of a restaurant, directly at the train station, because they had argued loudly.

"Of course, we have to investigate these rumors," said police spokeswoman Saskia Friedl at the beginning of the residents' survey. An enormous effort, but they wanted to better understand the background and the motive for the crime, it had already been said in advance by the Munich police. That another person could be involved in the killing of the young woman, there would be no evidence even after this afternoon.

"Quite common" – Large-scale resident survey in Sauerlach

Resident surveys like this are not an uncommon process in solving crimes – even in investigations where the case seems to have been resolved, Friedl said, "That's quite common." Rather, experience has shown that many witnesses often do not attach any importance to their observations at first. Or they would simply be afraid of making false statements and possibly incriminating innocent people.

"If you ask them again, they still remember and can often provide useful information," said the police spokeswoman. The shyness is great: "Even when neighbors complain about disturbing the peace, it is often said: Please do not mention my name. But we shouldn't do that at all," explains Saskia Friedl.

The survey of residents in Sauerlach was led by two investigators from the Munich Commissariat 11, responsible for homicides. The responses collected in this way were then evaluated. However, the police could not gain any new insights, Friedl said on Saturday evening.
