Against the background of rising crime in Arab society, and in the shadow of the cloud of 90 murdered in the sector who lost their lives in crime-related circumstances since the beginning of the year, a cloud hanging over the head of the government and the State of Israel, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced today (Monday) that he intends to appoint a special project whose task will be to deal with crime and murders in Arab society. Minister Ben-Gvir made the decision in light of the demand of the MKs from the Arab parties, and after holding an assessment of the situation with Police Commissioner RNZ Yaakov (Kobi) Shabtai and the district commanders of the police.

"The appointment of Projector has already come up in situation assessments conducted by the minister and the police commissioner in recent weeks," the minister said in a statement, "and Minister Ben-Gvir now intends to search for and appoint one within the next two weeks. The minister sees great importance in appointing a projector who will be in constant contact with the minister and the police commissioner and will be responsible for preparing and executing operative plans to reduce crime in the Arab sector," they added.

After assessing the situation, Ben-Gvir said: "I intend to put the fight against crime and murders in Arab society at the top of the National Security Ministry's list of priorities. I also intend to allocate enormous resources to this end by bringing police officers to the field, raising police salaries and establishing the National Guard."

In this context, it should be noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet this evening with Knesset members from the Arab parties to discuss with them their claims of the government's incompetence in dealing with crime and murderous violence in Arab society. According to Hadash-Ta'al, the meeting will reveal "the faction's document of 12 urgent demands to combat criminal organizations and strengthen the sense of personal security in Arab society," which was handed over to the prime minister.

Last Monday, in her speech at the Knesset, Knesset Member Aida Touma-Suleiman mentioned that since 2015 she has called for dealing with the issue of criminal organizations that do their own thing on the Arab street, "criminal organizations that have an army, an entire army that operates accurately." Meanwhile, all ten Knesset members from the Arab parties are expected to attend the meeting, including Ra'am, whose members did not sign the 40-signature document that enabled Touma-Suleiman's speech.

"The discussion we initiated at Hadash-Ta'al, with the participation of the prime minister, is a serious indictment that we are submitting as a company against the government and its leader, for leading a deliberate policy that has claimed 77 civilians and 6 murdered since the beginning of the year," the Knesset member said in her speech last week, at a time when the number of murdered stood at 83, while today it stands at 90.

According to Touma-Suleiman, the discussion with Prime Minister Netanyahu is "about abandoning our lives to a minister convicted of supporting terrorism, about silence in the face of a police commissioner who blames our mentality for murders, an indictment of leading a policy that encourages the next murder." She noted that under Netanyahu's watch, Israel reached a record high in the number of murdered, with shootings taking place on a daily basis in Arab communities. "Tonight they fired at the home of the mayor of Yafia, the mayors are threatened, people are living in terror, criminal organizations and all this on your watch!" she called on Netanyahu, "Since the beginning of the year, only two percent of murders have been solved, that means hundreds of murderers walking around among us."

Later, Touma-Suleiman named the 83 Arabs murdered since the beginning of the year. That was a week ago. Meanwhile, the number has grown to 90, almost three times the number killed in 2022, today a year ago. In her speech, she called, among other things, for the appointment of a "projector" for the task, just as MK Yoav Segalovich's mission was in the previous Knesset, when he also served as deputy minister of public security. Today it will be mentioned, Minister Ben-Gvir "complied" to her demand.

"We demand that whoever wants to fight crime in the Arab population must work with the Arab population, not with the Arab population. We need to talk to the Arab population and not talk about Arab crime," Touma-Suleiman said. It is expected that additional demands of Arab Knesset members will be raised this evening during the meeting with Netanyahu.
