In view of expensive energy costs, high inflation and rising prices, including when travelling, holidaymakers now have to look at their wallets more often. Significantly increased ticket prices have given Ryanair a profit in the Christmas quarter – even though the airline announced last year that it would abolish low-cost tickets and raise airfares due to the expensive fuel. In addition, the low-cost airline expects passenger numbers to rise in its current financial year. Ryanair expects strong demand, especially in the summer season.
But in addition to the low-cost flights, the airline is mainly known for its strict and expensive excess baggage regulations. Because if you buy a ticket from the Irish airline, you should be particularly precise when packing. A kilo more or one too many hand luggage can quickly become expensive. Now an outrageous Ryanair fee is causing a stir in Mallorca – triggered by two Mallorcan cakes.

Hand luggage limit exceeded: Ryanair charges passengers 45 euros fee for cake
An ensaimada is a traditional Spanish lard pastry and a popular souvenir. This, of all things, has now become a political issue in Mallorca. As the British newspaper The Guardian reports, two tourists wanted to take the cake with them as hand luggage. However, according to the airline, these exceeded the hand luggage limit. Passengers were to pay a total of 45 euros per cake. Understandably, they preferred to leave the cake behind.
Now Ryanair is arguing with the island government about it. As The Guardian writes, the government has convened an urgent meeting with Ryanair and the local association of confectioners. Iago Negueruela, Minister of Tourism of the Balearic Islands, told the British daily that a meeting was necessary "to protect local products and avoid any type of discrimination".
High carry-on fees: Disputes between authorities and airlines are not an isolated case
Pep Magraner, president of the Association of Pastry Chefs of the Balearic Islands, also pointed out that passengers who buy ensaimadas at the airport's duty-free shop can take them on board, which constitutes discrimination against other suppliers. "All other airlines allow passengers to take two Ensaimadas on board," Magraner said. "That's only a problem with Ryanair."
As Focus.de reported, the airline Air Europa is much more accommodating when it comes to taking the Spanish lard pastry with it. There you can buy two cakes outside the airport and take them with you as hand luggage. All you have to do is tie them together into a package.

However, the "Ensaimadas crisis" is not an isolated case. According to reports, there have been many disputes between authorities and airlines in the past. According to the Mallorca Zeitung, the consumer protection authority of the Balearic Islands has already punished five airlines, including Easyjet and Eurowings, for excessive hand luggage fees last year.
