Highlights: The Aitel, a freshwater fish, is currently spawning in the gravel on the Isar. In order to protect the eggs and the small fish, the district fishing association set up an exclusion zone. Stepping on the gravel, both spawn and fish can be crushed in the larval stage. In the coming weeks, the conservation rangers will pay attention to whether the barrier is taken into account, says Florian Herzinger, chairman of the Bad Tölz District Fishing Association.

Bad Tölz – The Aitel, a freshwater fish that lives in the Isar, among other places, is currently spawning. He lays his eggs in the gravel. For this purpose, he has chosen the section of the river in the area below the Isar bridge in Bad Tölz this year. In order to protect the offspring, an exclusion zone was set up on Monday.

Aitel is an important fish for the Isar - its spawn is in danger

It is not a valuable edible fish, as Florian Herzinger, chairman of the Bad Tölz District Fishing Association, explains. Nevertheless, the Aitel is important for the Isar because it serves as food for other fish. But his eggs are in danger. Because ducks, other fish and birds like to eat them. "That's nature," says Herzinger. But humans can also endanger the offspring of fish. "Bathers or dogs could accidentally step on the eggs," explains Herzinger. Because the female lays them in the gravel. Stepping on the gravel, both spawn and fish can be crushed in the larval stage.

Barrier tape marks exclusion zone on the banks of the Isar

To prevent this from happening, in the coming weeks, a barrier tape will mark the area in the shore zone that may not be entered about 70 meters before or after the Isar bridge. This area is determined in coordination with the Weilheim Water Management Office and the Lower Nature Conservation Authority at the District Office. "After 50 days, the fish have finished their larval stage and come out of the gravel," explains Franz Rampf, water warden of the fishing association.

Conservation rangers check whether barriers are taken into account

On Monday, Florian Herzinger and Franz Rampf from the district fishing association as well as the two nature conservation rangers Hans Adlwarth and Sabine Gerg got an idea of exactly which area should be cordoned off. "The okay is then given by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority," says Herzinger. In the coming weeks, the conservation rangers will pay attention to whether the barrier is taken into account.
