Protest also against Weihenstephan: Greenpeace Moosburg criticizes dairies for dealing with cows

Highlights: Greenpeace is demonstrating in Freising for the welfare of cows. Only a few of the large dairies in Germany sell milk from pasture farming. Only the Hamfelder Hof (100 percent) and Andechser (85 percent) sell at least predominantly milk from grass-fed farming. Keeping cows on pasture has a positive effect on the health of animals. Grazing cows can also contribute to climate protection. According to the Thünen Institute, grazed grassland stores 30 to 40 percent more climate-impacting carbon in the soil.

Freising – On Saturday, activists from Greenpeace Moosburg demonstrated in front of the Edeka branch on Untere Hauptstraße in Freising for species-appropriate husbandry of dairy cows on pasture. With a two-metre-high milk carton, they provide information about the consequences of milk production from well-known manufacturers for cows, biodiversity and the climate.

"Cows are actually grazing animals that cannot live in the barn according to their natural behavior," emphasizes Greenpeace spokesman Dieter Wahl. However, a survey by his organization showed that only a few of the large dairies in Germany sell milk from pasture farming or from dairy farms that do not use year-round or seasonal tethering, which is painful for cows.

Greenpeace activists formulate clear demand on dairies

Nationwide, 19 dairies were surveyed, which together process two-thirds of the milk produced in this country. In contrast to organic or grass-fed milk, many of these companies offer virtually no additional services, such as animal welfare and fair prices for milk producers. "Behind their PR fairy tales, brands such as Bärenmarke, Landliebe or Weihenstephan hide the fact that the cows are usually pretty dirty," says Wahl and demands: "The dairies should convert their assortment to milk from grass-fed farming in the near future."

Only the Hamfelder Hof (100 percent) and Andechser (85 percent) dairies sell at least predominantly milk from pasture farming. It was also asked whether surcharges for pasture or organic milk are paid. Keeping cows on pasture has a positive effect on the health of animals. Grazing cows can also contribute to climate protection. According to the Thünen Institute, grazed grassland stores 30 to 40 percent more climate-impacting carbon in the soil than arable plants.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, only 31 percent of cattle in Germany are currently grazing. According to Wahl, some of the best-known dairies such as Landliebe, Weihenstephan and Frischli did not want to give any information and therefore ended up in the last places. (ft)
