A serious accusation threatens the judge who jailed Lula da Silva and was Jair Bolsonaro's minister

The political world of Brazil has been surprised by a news that the media are still giving with caution: the possible criminal process against the mythical judge, Sérgio Moro, who led to the jail of Lula and today is a senator of the Republic.

The bomb has been raised by businessman Tony García when he revealed in several media that he was an infiltrator to collaborate with Judge Moro in the processes of the Lava Jato operation that led to important politicians and businessmen in jail. According to Luis Nassif, a columnist for Carta Capital, the revelations of the alleged infiltrator "are the crudest and most naked exposure of the sins of Lava Jato known."

The federal deputy, Rogério Correa, of the Workers' Party (PT), has already announced that he will ask that Tony García be heard in a public session of Parliament. There he should confirm his revelations that he was forced by Moro to create false evidence against politicians in exchange for having benefited in the processes against him.

Among the people who ended up in jail thanks to the whistleblower were the governor of Paraná, Beto Richa and 14 other politicians. According to the statements of Moro's alleged infiltrator, the judges placed accusations against PT politicians in his mouth "to prevent Lula from standing for election."

Judge Moro had sentenced Tony García in 2006 to six years in prison for crimes against the financial system and would have taken advantage of that sentence to coerce him to spy on and betray politicians from Lula's party.

The revelations about Judge Moro's alleged strategies are serious because they could end with a request by the Justice to send him to preventive detention. The issue is being treated with gloves because it is known that Lula would like to see Moro in jail, who had condemned him without evidence – as the Supreme Court later confirmed – which did not allow him to contest the 2018 election against Jair Bolsonaro.

The Workers' Party undoubtedly sees in the revelations of Moro's alleged infiltrator a possibility to confirm what he always defended: that the judge mounted the Lava Jato operation to help remove the left from power and favor the arrival of the extreme right. Then, to everyone's surprise, Moro ended up being Bolsonaro's justice minister.

Lula and the PT will have to examine with lead feet the new and explosive statements against Moro so that the suspicion of a ploy to take him to jail cannot be raised.

Hence, it is urgent that the revelations against the entire team of judges and prosecutors of Lava Jato be examined by Congress with the utmost seriousness and severity. There can be not the slightest suspicion that it could be a set-up, something that could damage the reputation of Lula, his party and his government.

The current cabinet already has enough problems with a Congress in which it is a minority and in which they are seen and desired to be able to approve their measures. This is because Bolsonaro's old hosts are still in the majority and are still willing to dislodge the left from power. Better not to add fuel to the fire.
