Matthias Reim has not only had happy times. The Schlager veteran speaks openly about his serious health problems.
Stockach – Schlager fans know Matthias Reim (65) as a performer par excellence, who gives everything at every performance and inspires young and old with his catchy songs. But the music legend hasn't always been in the mood to smile in recent years and, above all, his health has had to cope with some setbacks.
"The next inflammation of the heart muscle": Matthias Reim talks about concert cancellations due to illness
The end of 2022 was a particularly dark time for Matthias Reim. Although he was able to look forward to a new addition to the family - he and his wife Christin Stark (33) became parents of a daughter in March 2022 - physically the "Damn, I love you" interpreter was not up to par and had to cancel all concerts. A decision that was certainly not easy for him: "I'm Matthias Reim and he doesn't go home even with three knives in his back – that's what I thought," recalls in an interview with Der Spiegel.
Cancelling concerts is not easy for any artist in the world – but Matthias Reim had no other choice. "I had the flu, I was over it," he explains, "My doc warned me: If you don't call stop now, you'll get the next heart muscle inflammation." This was by no means the first horror diagnosis for Reim - in 2015, his health was similarly bad. "At that time, my pump was still running at 20 percent, and I was on the verge of multiple organ failure," he recalls.
Healed, healthy and recovered: These celebrities have had serious illnesses
In 2003, country legend Shania Twain (57) became infected with Lyme disease, almost lost her voice and was hardly able to perform for years. Today, fortunately, she is back to her old self and rocks stages all over the world. Her fellow musician Avril Lavigne (38) received the same diagnosis in 2014 – and has since fully recovered after a long battle with the disease.
Sylvie Meis (44) spoke publicly about her breast cancer for the first time in 2009. Although the tumor was discovered early enough, she still had to wear a wig for a long time after chemotherapy. Today, however, you can no longer tell from the beautiful TV star that she once came face to face with such a bad illness.
British actress Emilia Clarke (36) made a shocking confession in 2019: she had two brain aneurysms on the set of "Game of Thrones". Today she can look back on the bad experiences with a sense of victory. At the beginning of the year, US model Hailey Baldwin (25) experienced something similar. She was found to have blood in her brain – but after a few hours of anxiety, she was able to breathe again.

)New music and tour: Matthias Reim back on stage after health problems
Matthias Reim has now taken a break due to illness and is looking forward to a year full of new music and performances. He wants to release a new single this week and a live album is also in the pipeline – projects that he would certainly not have been able to realize without his rest period. "I could have broken all this if I hadn't listened to the doc," he emphasizes, "today I realize that."
