Building yard: City of Miesbach continues to rely on gas at peak - local heating connection seems possible

2023-06-06T11:11:58.448Z

Highlights: Miesbach's building yard operates two gas boilers from 1998. One was defective in mid-2022, and its repair was no longer economical. Replacement clarified: The building yard will be equipped with a new gas condensing boiler. The company has offered to have the municipal building yard connected, but it is already clear that an external peak load boiler would be needed for the building yard. The administration estimates its cost at 70,000 euros. It remains to be seen whether the connection to the local heating network will work.

How to heat the building yard? The city council has once again addressed this issue. Now a connection to a planned local heating system seems possible.

Miesbach – gas, pellets, wood chips or local heating – when it comes to choosing the most sensible heat supply for the building yard, the city of Miesbach is just as difficult as private homeowners. How many arguments are to be evaluated was recently shown by the discussion in the city council.

As reported, a year ago foreseeable problems had arisen with the heat supply of the building yard, which operates two gas boilers from 1998. One was defective in mid-2022, and its repair was no longer economical, according to the building yard. The other was described as highly susceptible to failure. The question at the time: Simply replace the gas system for 60,000 euros or switch to renewable energies such as heat pumps plus gas boilers, monovalent heat pumps, gas condensing technology with solar thermal energy, pellet heating, heating with local wood chips, combined heat and power plant with gas boiler or connection to a local heating network.

Sports and fitness park plans energy centre

In October 2022, the city council had hired a planner to weigh up the alternatives, but the results have now become superfluous. The reason: The Miesbach Sports and Fitness Park wants to build an energy centre for local heating supply in the immediate vicinity. The municipal agreement had been given by the building committee two weeks earlier. The company has offered to have the municipal building yard connected, but it is already clear that an external peak load boiler would be needed for the building yard. The administration estimates its cost at 70,000 euros. The advantage is that the gas condensing boiler could immediately cover the entire heating load and be reduced to peak load after connection to the local heating network, which cannot start until January 2024. A plan that provoked discussions.

Forest farmer Michael Lechner (Freie Liste) began to wonder whether a stationary wood chip heating system might not make more sense. However, it is important to rely on wood and biomass as much as possible. For Paul Fertl (SPD), a gas condensing boiler system for peak loads is "okay, because the photovoltaic system alone will not be enough, especially in winter". Stefan Griesbeck (CSU) agreed: "We have the option to connect and can calmly consider how to proceed with the gas condensing boiler. We can also think about a solar system for the water."

Building yard "systemically relevant"

Astrid Güldner (Greens) did not want to join this. "Oil and gas are not future-oriented and will become more and more expensive," the Second Mayor noted. Therefore, gas is "ecologically and economically not sensible". It is also not optimal to operate the peak load boiler away from the main plant. Overall, it makes more sense to rely on wood from the surrounding area instead of "gas from Putin and LNG from the USA". In addition, pellets and solar would receive full funding. Temporarily, a mobile gas system is preferable.

A position that Florian Hupfauer (FDP) commented whimsically: "One or the other here confuses federal with local politics." You don't have to have a guilty conscience with gas to get through the winter. Especially since the building yard is also "systemically relevant", as Alfred Mittermaier (CSU) added: "That's why I wouldn't move everything to an external provider." This was followed by the city council. With six votes against, the installation of the gas condensing boiler was approved. It remains to be seen whether the connection to the local heating network will work. DDY
