BRUSSELS - Italy is among the countries where interest in European politics has grown the most since the war and the pandemic. This was announced by the Eurobarometer survey published today by the European Parliament which states that interest in European politics in Italy has grown from 47% in 2018 to 58% today, a figure higher than 56% of the EU average. According to the survey, 64% of Italians would also be ready to go to the polls if the European elections were held in days, a figure slightly lower than the EU average (67%, it was 58% in 2019).
When asked whatvalue the European Parliament should defend, 37% of EU respondents cited the defence of democracy followed by the protection of rights at 28% and freedom of speech and thought at 27%. Defense of democracy is also the first value for Italians, at 34%, who then instead put freedom of speech and thought, at 28%, then at 26%, solidarity between Member States and regions. As far as EU policies are concerned, support for Ukraine enjoys an approval rating of 69% in the EU, with the highest figure in the Netherlands (90%), followed by Sweden, Finland and Ireland at 87%, while Italy stops at 61%. Below 50% instead Slovakia and Greece where a thin majority of citizens do not like Brussels' support for Kiev.
According to the research, 17% are very satisfied and 44% are in favor of the strategy adopted by Brussels to support Kiev. On the other hand, 26% express opposition, 9% are clearly against while 4% do not express themselves, reads the research. If we look at the European data, support for Ukraine enjoys an approval rating of 69% in the EU, with the highest figure in the Netherlands (90%), followed by Sweden, Finland and Ireland at 87%. Below 50% are Slovakia and Greece, where respectively 51% and 49% of citizens say they are against European support for Ukraine.
