2023-06-06T18:12:02.468Z

Highlights: From Munich to Vienna, an ÖBB Railjet (RJX) runs every two hours in about four and a half hours. From Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau, the capital of Austria can be reached even faster by ICE. With the ÖBB night train, travelers can even reach Paris while sleeping, but are on the road a little longer. From June 10 to September 9, 2023, the connection to Amsterdam will be canceled due to construction work. If you prefer the south, you can enjoy the sweet life on Lake Garda.

Whether Paris, Vienna or Lake Garda: From Bavaria, fantastic holiday destinations in Europe can be reached within a few hours by train. Merkur.de presents a selection of them.

1 / 8We start with our German-speaking neighbours: the Prater, Schönbrunn Palace, the Sissi Museum, numerous parks and coffee houses invite you to linger. With the Railjet from Munich, Budapest can be reached in less than seven hours. Alternatively, there is a night train with stops in Augsburg, Munich or Rosenheim. © IMAGO/F-Wagner3 / 8Prague is also easy to reach by train from Bavaria. The ALX takes about five and a half hours from Munich, and boarding in Landshut or Regensburg shortens the journey time. Once you arrive in the Czech Republic, you can stroll across the Charles Bridge with Baumstriezel, enjoy cheap goulash - and beers such as Pilsner Urquell are in no way inferior to Bavarian beer. © IMAGO/imageBROKER/Stephan Schulz4 / 8Another classic city trip: It takes about five and a half hours to get to Paris by ICE and TGV from Munich. The city of love attracts with numerous attractions: Eiffel Tower, art in the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles - or perhaps Disney Land for families. With the ÖBB night train, travelers can even reach Paris while sleeping, but are on the road a little longer. In Bavaria, they can board from Freilassing, Rosenheim or München Ost. © IMAGO/BEAUTIFUL SPORTS/Wunderl5 / 8Overnight we also go even further north, to the city of canals and bicycles. Two ÖBB Nightjets are flying from Bavaria to Amsterdam. The NJ 420 can be boarded in Munich, Augsburg and Nuremberg. The NJ 40490 stops in Passau, Regensburg and Nuremberg. Depending on the aboarding, the journey takes nine to twelve hours: it's a good thing that a large part of it can be overslept. © IMAGO/Zoonar.com/Bert De Boer6 / 8If you prefer the south, you can enjoy the sweet life on Lake Garda: with pizza, gelato, spritz or at one of the regular weekly markets. Places such as Peschiera and Desenzano del Garda are located away from the big cities, but have their own train station. First you take the Eurocity from Munich to Verona and then take the EC or regional train to the small holiday resorts - within less than six and a half hours. With the ÖBB Nightjet, there is even a direct connection from Munich. © IMAGO/Joana Kruse7 / 8Another place that impresses with its beautiful location near the lake and the Alps: Zurich is only three and a half hours away from Munich with the EuroCity-Express (ECE). Perfect for a weekend trip with chocolate and Gruyère as a souvenir. © IMAGO / Westend618 / 8If you are willing to take a longer journey, you can even get to Rome by train. The ancient city is bursting with impressive buildings such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and St. Peter's Basilica. As seen here, the city is very popular with tourists. From Munich, it takes about 13 hours by night train. But beware: From June 10 to September 9, 2023, the connection will be canceled due to construction work. © IMAGO/Guenter Nowack
