Striking images. A bridge under construction spanning the Ganges River collapsed sharply on Sunday in India's impoverished eastern province of Bihar, Reuters news agency reported.

The 3.6-kilometre bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in 2019, before being repeatedly delayed. The last postponement dates back to April 30, 2022, when the bridge had already collapsed for the first time during a storm.
'Strict measures'
The state's political opposition has been denouncing work and design flaws for months, accusing the government of mismanagement. "This is a living example of corruption, the fact that such an important bridge (...) collapsed like maps in the Ganges River, "denounced the Minister of Energy of the Indian Union, quoted by Le Parisien.

After the collapse, the Bihar government called for investigations, while promising to take "strict measures." In October 2022, a suspension bridge in western India collapsed and killed more than 130 people in the west of the country.
