Oops: MK from Shas accidentally entered a discussion about the gay community - and won applause (Knesset channel)

MK Yossi Taib of Shas accidentally entered a hall in the Knesset building on Tuesday where a conference of the lobby for the advancement of the gay community was being held. Taib sat at a table alongside opposition Knesset members and received applause from those present. Minutes later, his assistant whispered in his ear, and he walked out. Later it turned out that MK Taib was looking for another conference, of the lobby for higher education.

MK Jurai Lahav Herzano, one of the initiators of the lobby together with MK Merav Cohen, said upon Taib's inauguration: "We are honored by the presence of Knesset Education Committee Chairman Yossi Taib. Yossi, thank you for being with us," and everyone present applauded him. Lahav Herzeno asked: "Would you like to say a few things?" Taib replied in the negative, and MK Naama Lazimi added: "Thank you, Yossi."

At the end of the caucus meeting, MK Herzeno criticized the coalition members for their absence, writing: "Today we held LGBT Community Day in the Knesset, against the background of the danger of violating the rights of the community by the most LGBT government established in the history of the country." Lahav Herzeno said that "hundreds of activists and citizens participated in the discussions held throughout the day, but members of the Likud party were absent (except for two). As if it doesn't concern them, as if there are no LGBT people in the entire political spectrum in Israel. Where are the Likud members? Why are they letting the sleepwalking fringes of the government take over?"

The LGBT lobby in the Knesset, composed entirely of members of the opposition parties, organized a special day in the Knesset entitled "The LGBT Community Does Not Step Backward" in which LGBT organizations, civil society organizations, opinion leaders from the community and representatives of local authorities will participate, who will take part in special discussions dedicated to the LGBT community in Knesset committees. Earlier, Walla reported that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana had decided not to participate in Gay Community Day, which took place today at the Knesset building on the occasion of Pride Month.

The lobby and LGBT organizations invited Ohana, the only openly gay MK in the coalition and the politician who holds the most senior position in the history of the community, to participate in the day's events as a guest of honor and to deliver congratulatory remarks at the concluding event. But the Knesset Speaker's office refused the invitation citing scheduling considerations: "Hosting the Speaker of the Senate from Kazakhstan."
