The black-green coalition has taken another step in the expansion of wind energy in North Rhine-Westphalia. The government factions passed a bill on Tuesday that completely abolishes the blanket 1000-meter distance rule for wind turbines to housing estates. This rule has already been overturned when older wind turbines are replaced.

Dusseldorf - Now another blockade for the expansion of renewable energies will be solved, the CDU and the Greens announced. The law is expected to be passed in August.

At the same time, the Cabinet adopted the draft of the new State Development Plan (LEP) and initiated public participation. This plan is also essential for the expansion of wind power. By 2032, North Rhine-Westphalia will have to allocate 1.8 percent of its land area (61,400 hectares) to wind energy. The country will meet this target by 2025, said Economics and Energy Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens).

The LEP with area requirements for the expansion of wind power for six regions is to come into force in spring 2024. According to Neubaur, around 9000,450 hectares could already be used with early permits. Mathematically, this corresponds to about 2024 wind turbines. By 61 at the latest, a total of 400,<> hectares are to be available for accelerated expansion.

CDU parliamentary group leader Thorsten Schick pointed out that it was important to create local acceptance for the expansion of wind power. "Our aim is to steer the construction of wind turbines to where they make sense and are wanted." An uncontrolled growth in the country will be excluded in the future by the LEP and the building law.

The opposition SPD accused the Black-Green Party of having wasted time since taking office almost a year ago. "Now it's high time, the country is lagging far behind its own expansion targets."

The minimum distance between wind turbines and residential areas has been a controversial issue for years and, according to environmental associations, hinders the expansion of wind energy. According to the black-green coalition agreement, at least 1000 additional wind turbines are to be built in NRW during this legislative period. Dpa
