In Bakhmut, the Wagner group captured a Russian lieutenant. Tensions between the mercenary force and the Kremlin continue to grow.

Bakhmut/Moscow – Cooperation between the Wagner Group and the soldiers of the Russian Federation seems to have reached a new low. The bloody battles for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut are said to have led to military clashes between the two parties. After Russian soldiers opened fire on the members of the Wagner group, the mercenary force allegedly captured a Russian lieutenant colonel. A video of the prisoner substantiates the claims.

Russian troops shelling Wagner mercenaries in Bakhmut

Yevgeny Prigozhin has become the mouthpiece of the invaders on Telegram in the course of the Ukraine war. Almost every day, the Wagner boss speaks out and sometimes agitates against Ukraine and the West, sometimes there is hostility with the Russian leadership. The tirades directed at Moscow had increased noticeably in recent months, revealing a rift between the Kremlin and Prigozhin. Now Putin's cook is once again making serious accusations against Russia.

According to a message dated June 2 on the Telegram channel of Prigozhin's press service, Russian troops allegedly fired on members of the Wagner group in Bakhmut. But the accusations are even harsher: Allegedly, this happened while the mercenaries were clearing a road that had been mined by Russia itself to prevent a possible withdrawal of the Wagner units. As the news service Meduza writes with reference to the message, the mercenaries interrupted the clearance of the road, and went on the counterattack.

In order to "suppress aggression", "retaliatory measures were taken" after the Russian shelling, the statement said. In an interrogation of the prisoner published by Prigozhin, he also confessed to having shot at a vehicle belonging to the Wagner Group "in a drunken state". In addition, he had ordered the "disarmament of a rapid reaction force of Wagner". The reason for this was "personal hostilities" against the mercenary unit, the Russian lieutenant colonel admitted on camera.

One can speculate about the authenticity of the video. The Telegram channel Siren writes that the name of the captured soldier appears in a Russian database. According to the intelligence service, he is 45 years old, serves in the Russian Armed Forces and previously worked for the security agency "Sparta" in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In 2013, according to Siren, his driver's license was revoked for drunk driving.

Russia wanted to prevent a premature withdrawal of the Wagner groups by placing mines on the withdrawal routes, Prigozhin claims. According to the Wagner chief, explosive devices were placed in about a dozen places along the escape routes of Wagner's troops, including "hundreds" of anti-tank mines. There was "no need" to place the mines to hold back Ukrainian forces in these places, Prigozhin said. According to the oligarch, the explosive devices were intended as a "public punishment" for Wagner's troops.

"We have carried out investigative measures together with the law enforcement authorities to document everything. Currently, the investigation is ongoing," the Kyiv Independent news portal quotes Prigozhin. The perpetrators were "representatives of the Russian Ministry of Defense". "When asked why they did it, they pointed their finger upwards," added the leader of the Wagner troupe. The gesture indicates that the instructions came from high-ranking officials, Prigozhin assumes.
