Fighters of a nationalist volunteer corps apparently take control of a village in Belgorod

Update from June 5, 20:44 p.m.: Fighters of a volunteer corps consisting of Russian nationalists have apparently taken complete control of the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka in the Russian region of Belgorod. Because the Russian power apparatus is not interested in the fate of the region and no longer has the situation under control, they have now taken over the action, the Russian Volunteer Corps RDK announced on Telegram on Monday.

The information could not be independently confirmed. However, after days of shelling of the area, the governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, had indirectly admitted that he was no longer in control of the situation in the town. In Novaya Tavolzhanka near the city of Shebekin, the remaining 100 people could not be saved because there was shooting, Gladkov said in a video. The Ukrainian leadership had denied having anything "direct" to do with the attacks on the Russian region.

Ukraine apparently adequately equipped for counteroffensive

Update from June 5, 19:36 p.m.: According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine is sufficiently equipped to launch its counteroffensive. This is reported by the British Guardian. However, Kuleba did not say when this would begin. According to the politician, with this counteroffensive, Ukraine will achieve the victory needed to join NATO. According to the Foreign Minister, accession to the alliance will only be possible when the active conflict between Russia and Ukraine comes to an end.

Ukraine war: Kiev speaks of progress in eastern Ukraine

Update from June 5, 18:18 p.m.: According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can make progress in the east of the country. This was reported by Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar via Telegram. According to them, maneuvers are carried out at Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Paraskoviivka, Ivanivske and Klishchiivka. However, the information provided by the Ukrainian military has not been independently verified. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry reported repelling a Ukrainian counteroffensive in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials deny these reports.

Ukraine war: British Foreign Secretary Cleverly visits Zelensky in Kyiv

Update from June 5, 16:55 p.m.: British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his capital Kyiv. Via Telegram, Zelensky thanked the UK for its continued support. As the British Guardian reports, according to Zelensky, "important agreements" have been made in recent weeks. Britain has been providing intense support to Ukraine since the beginning of the war. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a few weeks ago that training Ukrainian fighter pilots on Western equipment could begin soon.

Ukraine war: Half of the bomb shelters in Kyiv not operational

Update from June 5, 15:21 p.m.: A commission of inquiry has declared almost half of the air-raid shelters it inspected in Kiev to be unoperational. "The situation remains critical," Ukrainian Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin wrote on Telegram on Monday. Of the approximately 1850 shelters inspected, around 45 percent were either not operational or inaccessible to the inspectors, according to him.

There are said to be problems with access to air-raid shelters in several districts of the Ukrainian capital, as Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram. Klitschko also pointed out that the administrations of the individual city districts had received around 1.2 billion hryvnia (about 300,000 euros) for the construction of emergency shelters in the past two years. According to Klitschko, it is still being examined how these funds were used.

Ukraine war: Kiev does not want to know about averted counteroffensive near Donetsk

Update from June 5, 14:06 p.m.: According to Russian data, a "major counteroffensive" by the Ukrainian army in the region around Donetsk was repelled. Several hundred Ukrainian soldiers were killed. Russia's Defense Ministry announced via Telegram that the fighting had taken place on the southern front around Donetsk. The information has not been independently verified.

In response to Russian reporting, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Armed Forces clarified to the American television channel CNN that Kiev would not have any information about such an offensive in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine war: Drone attacks in Russia could be planned by Ukrainian network

Update from June 5, 13:23 p.m.: Recently, images of a drone attack on the Kremlin caused international excitement. While Moscow blamed Ukraine for the attack, neither party officially claimed responsibility for the attack. Now the American television channel CNN reports that there is a network of Ukraine sympathizers and Ukrainian agents in Russia, which could be responsible for drone attacks and sabotage in Russia. CNN refers to American intelligence circles.

The drone attack on the Kremlin is also said to have been carried out by members of this network. The material was probably provided by Ukraine. However, the American experts could not explain with certainty how drones were able to cross the border into Russia.

European intelligence sources say that the border with Russia is extremely vulnerable to smuggling and corruption because it is wide and confusing. "It's important to take into account that the border is rural Russia," a European official told CNN. "Everyone is trying to survive there, and money works wonders there."

Ukraine war: Prigozhin rails against 'shameful' defeat in eastern Ukraine

Update from June 5, 11:30 a.m.: Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Monday that Ukrainian forces had recaptured part of the Berkhivka settlement north of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, calling it a "disgrace." This is reported by the Reuters news agency.

Prigozhin's private Wagner army had captured Bakhmut last month after the longest battle of the war and handed over the positions there to regular Russian troops.

Ukraine war: More than 300 attacks with kamikaze drones in May

Update from June 5, 10:15 a.m.: According to British intelligence estimates, Russia carried out more than 300 attacks with so-called kamikaze drones against targets in Ukraine in May. This was the "most intensive use of this weapon" so far, the Ministry of Defense in London announced on Monday. Russia is presumably trying to get Ukraine to use valuable, modern anti-aircraft missiles.

But the ministry stressed: "It is unlikely that Russia has been particularly successful: Ukraine has neutralized at least 90 percent of incoming drones, mainly with its older and cheaper anti-aircraft weapons and with electronic jammers." This also applies to another likely Russian target: attacks on Ukrainian forces far behind the front line. "However, due to its flawed targeting processes, Russia remains very inefficient when it comes to hitting such dynamic targets from a distance," it added.

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense has been publishing daily information on the course of the war, citing intelligence information. In doing so, the British government wants to both counter the Russian narrative and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.

Russian field commander: enemy "accompanied by success"

Russian field commander Alexander Khodakovsky has contradicted Moscow's success stories about the failure of a major Ukrainian offensive in the Donbas. So far, the enemy is "accompanied by success," Khodakovsky wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday. According to him, the attacks west of Wuhledar are a limited tactical operation by the Ukrainians. Khodakovsky headed the "Vostok" brigade of the separatists in the Donbass region since 2014. His units were incorporated into the Russian National Guard after the start of the war of aggression against Ukraine.

Ukraine war: Russia claims to have repelled major Ukrainian offensive

Russia has thwarted a major Ukrainian offensive in the south of the Donetsk region, according to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow. "The enemy's goal was to break through our defenses on the part of the front that he considered most vulnerable," Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Monday night, according to the state news agency Tass. The enemy had failed in his mission. The alleged offensive began on Sunday morning on five sections of the front, it said. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost more than 250 soldiers.

The information could not be independently verified. Initially, there was no comment from Kiev. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had recently repeatedly stressed that his country was ready for the long-announced counteroffensive to liberate its territories from Russian occupation.

In his evening address on Sunday, the Ukrainian president had not mentioned the beginning of an offensive. Zelensky had announced that at least 485 children had been killed since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. These were exclusively victims whose data had been officially recorded. In reality, the number is much higher.

Ukraine war: Renewed fighting flares up in Russian border region

Meanwhile, in the Russian border region of Belgorod, fighting between the army and volunteer units fighting alongside the Ukrainians has apparently flared up again. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed fighting in the village of Novaya Tavolshanka. Russia's Defense Ministry said it had succeeded in preventing a "sabotage and reconnaissance group of Ukrainian terrorists" from crossing a nearby river.

For some time now, there have been repeated battles and attacks in the Belgorod region, for which Moscow always blames Kiev. In fact, however, the invaders appear to be members of the so-called "Russian Volunteer Corps", which is fighting on the side of the Ukrainians but consists of Russian nationalists.

Several members of the paramilitary organization also released a video on Sunday claiming to have captured several soldiers of the Russian army and wanted to hand them over to the Ukrainian side.

Mercenary chief Prigozhin accuses army of mining retreat routes

The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner again made serious accusations against the regular Russian army. In mid-May, soldiers mined a road on which his fighters wanted to drive out of the now conquered eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Yevgeny Prigozhin said. He also published a document purporting to be an operational protocol from mid-May, which also mentions exchanges of fire between Wagner mercenaries and soldiers. These allegations could not be verified. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow did not comment on this.

More than 15 months after the invasion of Ukraine, power struggles are raging in Russia's military leadership, which are clearly becoming apparent. Again and again, Prigozhin has recently railed against Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, whom he accused of poor warfare and a lack of ammunition for the Wagner fighters. (with agency material)
