A serious accident between Amberg and Neustadt in the Upper Palatinate triggered a large-scale operation. But for a U.S. soldier, any help came too late.
Neustadt/Amberg – On Monday afternoon (5 May), a serious traffic accident occurred shortly after 17 p.m. on state road 2166 between the villages of Dürnast in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab and Thansüß in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach. According to initial information from the local police, a U.S. soldier drove his Skoda on the state road coming from Thansüß in the direction of Dürnast and collided head-on with an oncoming VW on a slightly damp road. The VW was thrown into the ditch after the collision.

Serious accident in the Upper Palatinate: American dies in hospital
The driver was able to leave her vehicle on her own, but was seriously injured and taken to a nearby clinic. The American was freed from the totally destroyed Skoda by the alerted rescue workers and was also transported to a clinic by ambulance with serious injuries. There he succumbed to his serious injuries some time later.
The public prosecutor's office ordered an expert to the scene. In addition to the local fire brigade Thansüß, the fire brigades Freihung and Vilseck from the district of Amberg-Sulzbach as well as the fire brigades from Kaltenbrunn and Mantel from the district of Neustadt were alerted to the scene of the accident. In addition, several ambulances and emergency doctors, the HvO Kaltenbrunn and the rescue helicopter Christoph 80 from Weiden. After about three hours, the state road was freely passable again.
