The animosity between Apple and Meta is about to enter a new dimension. While Mark Zuckerberg's company dominates head and shoulders the sector of virtual and mixed reality headsets with its Meta Quest range (80% according to NDP), Apple unveiled Monday its replica with the premium headset Vision Pro, scheduled for 2024.
This is the first time that the two groups, with previously radically opposed business models (free applications financed by targeted advertising on the one hand, sales of premium devices and services on the other), find themselves in head-on competition in the same market.
It is partly because of Apple that Meta went through a dark year in 2022 from a financial point of view. For the first time in its history, the king of social networks has seen its advertising revenue decrease, leading to a severe stock market tumble and an unprecedented redundancy plan with more than 20,000 positions eliminated.
