"Really frightening": Weather in Bavaria between locally strong thunderstorms and momentous drought

2023-06-07T13:12:15.696Z

Highlights: It's summer in Bavaria – and the weather is showing its changeable side. On the one hand, it is too dry, but there is also a threat of severe thunderstorms. From Thursday, 8 June, to Sunday, 11 June, temperatures will fluctuate between 25 and 30 degrees. Even in the north, at least on Wednesday, June 7, "isolated storms due to heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter in a short time" cannot be ruled out.

Munich – Hot days, balmy nights: The start of summer has been largely successful in Bavaria since 1 June. Of course, this depends on the point of view – while most people are happy about the sun, meteorologists and experts are already warning of severe drought and an increasing risk of forest fires. This will also be the case in the coming days.

Weather in Bavaria: Lots of drought and sun – but also risk of thunderstorms

In general, it remains dry, warm and sunny in June for the time being. Dominik Jung, meteorologist at wetternet, explains in the current YouTube video that the "high air pressure" continues to dominate. For more than a week, the rain has been pushed further back, which makes for warm and dry days. "There is no land rain in sight," explains Jung. The June and July forecast is "really frightening," explains the expert with regard to the lack of rain. But: In Bavaria it still gets uncomfortable here and there. Jung calls the whole thing the "famous drop in the ocean".

In general, people in Bavaria must therefore be prepared for rather changeable weather. From Thursday, 8 June, to Sunday, 11 June, temperatures in Bavaria will fluctuate between 25 and 30 degrees. And while in the north around Nuremberg it remains mostly sunny with cloudless skies, there are clouds in the south around Munich from time to time. In the east and in the Alps, there is also a risk of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

Even storms possible in Bavaria – forecast worries experts

But even in the north, at least on Wednesday, June 7, "isolated storms due to heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter in a short time cannot be ruled out," writes the German Weather Service (DWD). After a temporary calming down on Thursday morning, things are getting busy again in the evening: "Risk of local thunderstorms due to heavy rain. Occasional large hail and severe gusts of wind up to 100 km/h cannot be ruled out," says the DWD on the weather situation in Bavaria.

However, a look at the "Climate Forecast System", or CFS for short, is a headache for wetternet expert Dominik Jung despite the thunderstorm warning and heavy rain announcement. This is because the CFS shows the predicted precipitation deviation in June – and this is constantly being corrected. Compared to the climate average for the years 1991 to 2020, it is expected to be too dry throughout Germany in June. Same game in July 2023 - here, too, the CFS map for Bavaria shows red and orange almost everywhere, which means too little rain. However, Jung explains that this is not yet a reason for panic. (FHZ)
