A promising Florida high school softball player and her mother were brutally stabbed by the teen's ex-boyfriend as they left a restaurant to meet him, authorities said.

The attack, described by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office as a "targeted attack," occurred Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Mr. Chubby's Wings restaurant on Ponte Vedra Beach.

The teen, identified by the family as Madison Schemitz, was eating at the restaurant with her mother, Jacki Roge, and some friends when they spotted the ex-boyfriend sitting nearby, according to an arrest document.

Roge was in the process of getting a restraining order against Ross Pearson, her daughter's ex-boyfriend, according to Jacksonville's WLTV, an NBC affiliate, which cited a relative. In April, Pearson began "following and harassing" the teen, according to the document.

Schemitz, 17, and his mother left the restaurant to avoid contact with Pearson, 18, according to cops. Seconds later, "he was seen attacking the underage victim and his mother as they walked to their vehicle," the statement said.

Pearson held Schmitz with one hand "and stabbed her approximately 15 times," one of the victims told investigators, according to the affidavit.

The mother tried to intervene and was stabbed by Pearson in the forehead and leg, the document said. He also stabbed a person who came to the aid of Schemitz and his mother, the statement said.

That person was able to "separate" Pearson, who then began "slit his throat" and told several witnesses he was trying to kill himself, the affidavit expanded.

The victims and the suspect were hospitalized following the incident, which left Schemitz with "life-threatening injuries," the statement said.

A website was set up to raise money to pay for the medical costs of Schemitz, an outstanding student and senior athlete at Ponte Vedra High School who also has five siblings.

"I'm about to go into surgery, my muscles were cut to the bone in one hand," he added.

The condition of the person who came to the aid of both was unknown until Tuesday.

Pearson was charged with two counts of attempted premeditated murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Authorities served him with a warrant for his arrest at the hospital, where he was on Tuesday. He was ordered to have no contact with the victims or to possess a firearm, said the warrant, which requires him to carry a GPS locator.
