Explain the following:

It is obvious that, in matter, necessity dominates. In the material world everything happens fatally. The material world, as science presents it to us, is an immense machine, a kind of clock, whose parts fit perfectly to each other; Everything in it is mechanism. And when, with scientific habits, we consider man, we are necessarily pushed to see him as a mechanism in the middle of other mechanisms, as a being that functions automatically. All freedom seems impossible. Of course, common sense protests and has always protested against this idea that man is some kind of automaton. It seems obvious to us that the will has the power to choose. Right now, I'm free, apparently, to turn right or left. To the right? Or to the left? I decide for the right. This, according to appearances, is something incalculable, something totally unpredictable; and it may be said and repeated that science, if it had sufficient data, could calculate in advance everything that happens in this world, this act seems to absolutely exclude calculation and forecasting; as it would also be impossible to calculate a solar eclipse if the Moon, at the moment of slipping between the Sun and the Earth, could say to itself: "What am I going to do? What if I played a prank on the astronomer who is there, watching me? Freedom, if it exists, is precisely that: the ability to deceive science.

Topic 2

Topic 3

Explain the following:

But what ingratitude, what a short vision to aspire to the abolition of culture! What would then remain would be the state of nature, and this is much more difficult to bear. It is true that nature does not ask us to restrict our instincts, it leaves them all freedom, but it has its way, and particularly effective, of restricting us: it destroys us coldly, cruelly, brutally, as it seems to us, and this precisely sometimes on the occasion of our satisfactions. It is precisely because of these dangers, the nature of which threatens us, that we have come closer and have created the culture which, among other reasons for being, must allow us to live together. In truth, the main task of culture, its essential raison d'être is to protect us from nature.

As we know, in many areas it is already doing this very well, and in the future it will obviously do it even better. But no one entertains the illusion that nature is already tamed, and very few dare to hope that it will one day be entirely subservient to man. Here are the elements, which seem to mock any constraint that man would seek to impose on them: the earth, which trembles, which splits, which engulfs man and his work, the water, which rises, and floods and drowns all things, the storm that carries everything before oneself; Here are the diseases, which we have only recently known to be due to the attacks of other living beings, and finally the painful enigma of death, for which no cure has so far been found and probably never will be. With these forces, nature stands against us, sublime, cruel, inexorable; Thus it reminds us of our weakness, our distress, which we hoped to escape through the work of our culture. It is one of the rare noble and exhilarating spectacles that men can offer to see them, in the presence of a catastrophe due to the elements, forget their disagreements, the quarrels and hostilities that divide them in order to remember their great common task: the maintenance of humanity in the face of the superior forces of nature.
