The Police Investigations Department, through attorney Keren Lavie, asked today (Wednesday) during the plea hearing for punishment in the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court to impose a sentence of community service on Border Police fighter Oriane Ben Kalifa, who was convicted of assaulting an East Jerusalem resident.

The PIU claimed that about two years ago, Ben Kalifa acted violently towards the complainant, a young woman who wanted to cross the checkpoint, both in the first stage when she met her and her brother at the checkpoint, and in the brutal transport to the police station and at the police point itself. The PIU noted that this was not an isolated incident or a single blow, but rather "a violent and ongoing attack by a female police officer who is supposed to set an example, certainly when she has a young policeman at her side in the training stage, and to avoid abuse of her power." It was also claimed by the DIP that the defendant did not take responsibility for her actions and did not express any remorse. Nevertheless, she asked for only a light sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for June 20.

Attorney Eyal Basarglik, who represents Ben Kalifa, asked that her conviction be overturned and that she be satisfied with a sentence of community service, in light of the fact that she wishes to continue her service in the Border Police. "We are dealing with a young woman who had her whole life ahead of her, gave her best young years to the state, and there is no reason to tarnish her professional future and limit her professional possibilities with a conviction," explained attorney Basreglik. Last month, Border Police Commander Amir Cohen decided to return the female fighter to service, with the support of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai.

In November 2021, Ben Kalifa pushed a civilian who wanted to cross a place she had blocked on an order she received. Ben Kalifa removed the headscarf worn by the complainant, pulled her hair, hit her on the head and knocked her to the ground. Later, she led the complainant to the police station holding her hair and neck, and when they arrived she shouted at her, choked and shook her.
