Gräfelfing – After thoroughly weighing up all the arguments, the mayor of Gräfelfingen, Peter Köstler, street festival organizer Jan Konarski, as well as the civil engineering department and the public order administration, have agreed that the popular street festival will "exceptionally not take place" this year. This is stated in a press release from the Gräfelfinger town hall.
"The background to this measure is the complete renovation of Bahnhofstraße Ost, which we can no longer postpone due to its urgency," explains Mayor Peter Köstler. "We deeply regret this step, as the street festival is of course an integral part of our annual calendar and is the big highlight after the summer holidays. But safety aspects make it almost impossible to carry it out correctly with the elimination of road surfaces due to the construction work in the summer."
Escape routes, flea market, traffic
"Due to the elimination of the corresponding road areas, not only can many offers such as the flea market not be carried out, but above all escape routes and possibilities for diverting traffic are eliminated," says Jan Konarski. Although Eichendorffplatz remains basically untouched by the construction measures, the children's programme cannot be carried out in the usual form. Because of the diversion traffic on Rottenbucher Straße, there will be too much traffic here, and the bus lines will of course be diverted accordingly. "Likewise, we cannot carry out the offers of the street festival, which take place in Rottenbucher Straße," says Konarski. "We didn't take the decision lightly, but unfortunately we don't see any other option for this year. We ask the citizens and, of course, all friends of the street festival for their understanding. Next year it will be all the nicer again."
Renovation in two steps
The eastern part of Bahnhofstraße is in poor condition, which is already affecting road safety. Therefore, a deep renovation is required. It will also include drainage to be better prepared for future heavy rainfall events. In addition, district heating pipelines are already being laid in order to be able to supply parts of the municipality with district heating from deep geothermal energy, probably from 2025. The renovation will be carried out in two phases: The first construction phase extends from Eichendorffplatz to the junction with Tassilostraße. It will start at the beginning of July 2023 and is expected to run until mid-November. The second construction phase extends from Tassilostraße to the junction with Stefanusstraße. It will take place from mid-March to mid-August 2024.
