Golf clubhouse with a glamorous history

2023-06-07T08:22:43.948Z

Highlights: Olching Golf Club in Bavaria has been around for four decades. Golf is becoming more and more of an elitist hobby to a mass leisure activity. Driving ranges for everyone are opening, for example in Puchheim, with a view of high-rise buildings instead of Lake Starnberg. Golf clubs are responding with discount campaigns to win over normal people. But one thing has remained the same: many come from the same age: retirement age. But it is important for active members to be an active part of the team.

The golf course in Olching has long been an institution in the middle of the city. The clubhouse has been around for four decades.

Olching – Some people say that this is the most beautiful terrace in Bavaria. In the past, the celebrities gave each other the handle: Schuhbeck, Carpendale and Beckenbauer. But despite a good image, times are not easy in this profession either.

The Olching clubhouse was opened 40 years ago, and the golf world has changed since then. It's not that golfing is no longer in vogue. Quite the opposite. It seems to be becoming more and more of an elitist hobby to a mass leisure activity. Driving ranges for everyone are opening, for example in Puchheim, with a view of high-rise buildings instead of Lake Starnberg. Golf clubs are responding with discount campaigns to win over normal people. The opinions of insiders about this low-cost competition are different.

Among the best golf clubs in Germany

In the renowned and respected Olching Golf Club, where members pay around 2000 euros annual fee, these "discount" offers are not only seen negatively. "After all, that's how people get to play golf in the first place," explains Vice President Kai-Otto Landwehr. It is a low-threshold alternative for beginners. Once they have obtained their licence to play, they are potential new members for the Olching Golf Club. After all, it is one of the "Leading Golf Clubs of Germany", a quality feature. On the website you can read that the square has the "most beautiful terrace in Bavaria". Here you can look at green instead of gray.

The terrace belongs to the clubhouse. This has experienced ups and downs over the past 40 years. Recently, it has not been easy to establish a gastronomy, not least because of Corona. For months, the restaurant stood empty. New innkeepers from the far north have just taken over and offer pasta, pizza and burgers, among other things, during the "time out".

The golf club team around President Martina Drechsler hopes to be able to reconnect with old, glorious times after some fuss (also in internal ranks). Club founder Georg Böhm reported on these at a press conference. He has experienced times when life in the clubhouse raged on many weekends a year, which was of course also good for the gastronomy.

Böhm played a significant role in this: Without the 76-year-old, the golf course with its 18-hole course would not even exist. With a lot of initiative and his own capital, he implemented the project together with other founding members. At that time, the clubhouse alone cost three million marks, the space on Feursstraße 1.5 million. The founders had to vouch for 100,000 marks. In 1981, Olching's mayor Manfred Krug broke ground. The clubhouse, a pure wooden building, was inaugurated two years later.

Olching is not the navel of the golf world

Now, of course, there was a problem: "Olching was not the navel of the golf world," said Böhm. But he was well connected, could bring in celebrities and advertise properly. Beckenbauer, Carpendale and Schuhbeck swung the golf club in the media. Spectacular actions, such as the landing of a parachutist handing over the golden key, made good headlines. Just like the names of the professionals from the sports world: Bernhard Langer, Armin Hary (100-meter runner), Willy Bogner and Gary Player (golf superstar from Africa). It also helped that the first restaurateur in the clubhouse came from the star kitchen and had contacts with well-known colleagues who paid a visit to Olching.

My Area

At the time, the Golfcub was the youngest in Germany. This has changed a lot: most members are now of retirement age. But one thing has remained the same: many come from the Munich catchment area. Of the 949 members, only 201 live in Olching. However, it is important for the team to be an active part of the city's life. The club offers taster courses every two weeks for 29 euros – followed by a drink on the dream terrace.
