According to reports, the victims were a father and his 18-year-old son who were shot at close range by the armed youth. Richmond police said the shooter knew at least one of the victims. In addition to five people injured in the shooting, two people were injured after falling while fleeing the gunfire and a 9-year-old girl was run over by a car as she tried to flee the scene, sustaining minor injuries.

Richmond High School Superintendent Jason Kamers responded to the incident, saying, "The attack occurred on what should have been a day of joy with students receiving their diplomas.
