Five police officers in Verona, northeastern Italy, have been placed under house arrest on suspicion of torturing those arrested, mainly migrants, press reports on Wednesday.
According to the daily La Stampa, an inspector and four officers are accused of beating and insulting those arrested during various interventions, while a dozen of their colleagues are under investigation on suspicion of not having hindered them.

The newspaper quotes a former detainee, a Romanian, as saying how these policemen forced him to urinate in a corner of his cell at the Verona police headquarters, not wanting to take him to the toilet, then beat him and dragged him to the same corner to clean the urine with his body.

If these cases were confirmed, it would be of enormous gravity, "responded Wednesday the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, such behavior "undermining the dignity of the victims but also the honor and reputation" of thousands of honest policemen.

The video shows three officers surrounding the 41-year-old woman, beating her on the head and ribs with batons and spraying gas on her face as she sits in the street with her hands up.
