Justice Minister Yariv Levin of the Likud hinted in a speech to the Knesset plenum on Wednesday that he does not intend to convene the committee for the selection of judges for the purpose of appointing new judges. Levin did not say this explicitly, but claimed: "The process of selecting judges was done in an inappropriate and unacceptable way, as things are now happening in a committee with a panel that cannot be accepted and is not suitable or can be accepted in a democratic country, and precisely because of this - we are working to change that."

Levin made the remarks in response to a question from Likud MK Avichai Boaron, who wondered if there is selective enforcement vis-à-vis the leaders of the protests against the government and the promotion of legal reform. Levin also attacked Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara: "This reality of selective enforcement and there is no other way to call things is outrageous. I would say that it is perfectly fine if the policy is that it is permissible to block roads and there is no problem, only that unfortunately this is a new policy that was born in honor of demonstrations on one side, because when there were demonstrations on the other side in a much more difficult and painful event of expelling about ten thousand Jews from their homes and handing over parts of the homeland, the figures were six thousand arrests and more than 600 indictments."

Levin continued: "I don't remember a single word said by the attorney general on this matter since these riots began on such a huge scale, since the harassment began and the threats against public figures began. I would say that perhaps this too is a new policy of the Attorney General, silence and non-intervention and not saying anything, had it not been for the fact that after I presented the legal reform, the Attorney General hurried to travel all the way to Haifa to participate in the conference and attack the proposal I proposed in harsh words. There are things that she apparently considers important, namely to thwart the legal reform, and there are things that are not important, that is, to ensure public order or to ensure and maintain the safety of elected officials from one side of the political map. This situation of selective enforcement cannot be accepted."

Gantz and Michaeli relinquished representative - the only opposition candidate for the Judicial Selection Committee

This morning, on the last day of submission of candidacy, it was decided that Knesset Member Karine Elharrar Mish Atid will be the opposition's only representative on the Judicial Selection Committee. At first, National Camp Chairman Benny Gantz announced that he would not present a candidate on his behalf to the committee, and called on Yesh Atid Chairman Yair Lapid and Labor Chairman Merav Michaeli, who presented a candidate on their behalf, to reach an agreement between them. Shortly thereafter, Michaeli announced the withdrawal of her candidacy from MK Efrat Reitan.

This is a development that will make it difficult for the coalition to choose two candidates on its behalf and change its power in the composition of the judicial selection committee. The coalition presented two candidates to the committee in order to preserve the possibility that two will be elected on its behalf, if no agreement is reached in talks on the legal revolution in the president's residence.
