The left-wing extremist Lina E. and three men are said to have attacked right-wing extremists. Now they are taking action against the sentence of several years in prison.

Dresden – In the left-wing extremism trial in Dresden, Lina E. and three convicted men have appealed against last Wednesday's verdict. This was announced by the Dresden Higher Regional Court (OLG). Previously, the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk had reported on it. The 28-year-old student Lina E. and three co-accused men between the ages of 28 and 37 had been sentenced to several years in prison for left-wing extremist acts of violence.

A spokeswoman for the OLG said the files would be handed over to the Federal Court of Justice. However, the judgment must first be submitted to the Chamber in writing. The spokeswoman was unable to provide any information on the expected duration of the appeal proceedings.

On May 31, Lina E. was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. The State Security Senate of the Higher Regional Court of Dresden found the left-wing extremist from Kassel guilty of being a member of a criminal organization for several attacks on right-wing extremists. Three co-accused men received prison sentences of between two years and five months and three years and three months. Between 2018 and 2020, they are said to have ambushed and attacked right-wing extremists in varying degrees of involvement.

The four convicts are currently at large. The arrest warrant against Lina E. was conditionally suspended on the evening of the verdict. Previously, she had been in custody for more than 2.5 years. According to the OLG, the sentences do not have to be served until after a final conviction. If there is a risk of absconding, arrest warrants could also be issued earlier. Lina E. had to hand over her passport and identity card to the Higher Regional Court of Dresden. She has to report to the police twice a week.

During the pronouncement of the verdict, there had been loud protests from the left-wing scene in the courtroom. In the following days, there were clashes with the police at several demonstrations in Leipzig. A solidarity demonstration had previously been prohibited by the city of Leipzig.

The interior committee in the Saxon state parliament wants to deal with the riots after the verdict on June 12. The left-wing scene in Leipzig is considered comparatively radical, had announced riots after the verdict and proclaimed "Day X". Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster has called for a concept against left-wing extremism. He sees parallels between the convicted left-wing extremists and the terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF). (lrg/dpa)
