Highlights: The French government is considering a 10% discount on motorway tolls. The government will meet with highway companies next week to determine the terms of the discount. The tolls have risen by 4.75% this year. The French government says the tolls should not be paid by the public, but by the private sector. The public should pay the full cost of the toll, the government says, with the rest of the money going to carpools and charging stations. The proposal is expected to be approved in the coming days.

The Minister of Transport will meet with highway companies next week to determine the terms of this measure.

A few weeks before departures for the summer holidays, the government is trying to force the hand of motorway companies to lighten the wallet of the French. "It is important [that they] make a commercial gesture," said Clément Beaune this Wednesday morning on RTL.

Last summer, a 10% discount was granted to motorists paying by holiday voucher. "But it arrived in mid-July, this year it must be done earlier," said the Minister of Transport. The government requires a rebate on the price of tolls "of at least 10%" as well as a 40% discount for regular travelers.

I receive the highway companies next week" to determine "the modalities" of this measure, added the minister. For the latter, this gesture is essential while tolls have increased by 4.75% this year.

Asked about a possible free toll in summer, Clément Beaune castigated a "demagogy and lies", justifying that "the road is financed". If 40% of the price of tolls arrives in the coffers of the State, it asks "highway companies to invest" the remaining 60% "in charging stations or carpooling devices".
