Video: Demonstrators disrupt Minister Barkat's speech at a conference in Tel Aviv (official website)
Economy Minister Nir Barkat of the Likud canceled his participation in the consulate's conference in Boston on Thursday for fear of protests against him, against the background of protests against the government and the promotion of legal reform. Those around Barkat accuse Israeli Consul Meron Reuven of refusing to commit to preventing demonstrators from entering the conference or disturbances during Barkat's speech.

The Consulate's conference is to mark Israel's 75th Independence Anniversary, and Minister Barkat was supposed to be one of its most prominent guests on behalf of the Israeli government. Sources around Barkat told Walla! "It is incomprehensible that an official representing the Israeli government acts against ministers of that government. A serious home inspection is needed here."
The Foreign Ministry said in response: "The Israeli consulate in Boston invited Minister Barkat to participate in the welcome event in honor of Israel's Independence Day as the guest of honor. The mission does not interfere with the security arrangements outside the banquet hall in the public area."

The protest against Barkat in Boston is part of a series of protests held in recent days against ministers and Knesset members who visit the United States and participate in media conferences or other festive events such as the support march known as the "Israel March" in New York. Barkat began his visit to New York and Boston earlier this week, on a trip he financed with his own money.
