The Kilauea volcano, Hawaii's second largest, erupted again Wednesday after a three-month hiatus, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Hawaii Volcano Observatory, under the USGS, explained in a statement that it detected early in the morning a flash in images captured by cameras at the top of Kilauea, which interpreted as an eruption in the Halema'uma'u crater.

The images show fissures at the base of the crater that generate lava flows on the surface of its floor, the observatory said.

Before issuing the eruption advisory, the observatory said Tuesday night began recording increased seismic activity, and changes in ground deformation patterns at the summit, indicating magma movement underground.

All activity is located within a closed area of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island of Hawaii, and does not affect population centers in principle.
The volcano's alert level was raised to warning status and the aviation color code changed to red as scientists assess the eruption and associated hazards.

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, was active from September 2021 to December last year. For several weeks in December, Mauna Loa, Hawaii's largest volcano located on the same island, also erupted.
