Back office: a mysterious name for a Ukrainian law firm like no other. For its wealthy clients, pushing its doors is a guarantee of being laundered. The company allegedly allowed Ukrainian oligarchs to buy the decisions of judges, up to those of the president of the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country.
The latter, Vsevolod Kniaziev, was arrested on 18th May on charges of having received a record bribe of 2.7 million dollars (2.5 million euros). Involving a lawyer and two judges, these arrests are both a painful reminder of the corruption of Ukraine's judicial system, nine years after the Maidan revolution, but also of the ongoing struggle to get rid of it, even in the midst of war.
The lawyer is accused of having served as an intermediary for the oligarch Konstantin Jevago, the fifth richest man in Ukraine. In January 2023, the Supreme Court began to examine the case of the sale of shares in the Poltava mining plant by Ferrexpo...
