It must be done every year by cars and motorcycles, from a certain age, both in the Capital and in the Province of Buenos Aires. The VTV is mandatory for private cars with more than 3 years old or more than 60 thousand kilometers of use. It applies to all vehicles over 2 years old in any jurisdiction. The Vehicle Technical Verification (VTV) is the periodic control of the mechanical condition and the emission of polluting gases of cars and motorcycles. This test plays a fundamental role in the prevention of traffic accidents since its objective is to avoid them by reviewing and detecting a possible failure or mechanical damage.

It must be done every year by cars and motorcycles, from a certain age, both in the Capital and in the Province of Buenos Aires. Private cars with more than 3 years old or more than 60 thousand kilometers of use, and private motorcycles with more than 1 year if they are from CABA.

In the Province of Buenos Aires, it applies to all vehicles over 2 years old. In any jurisdiction, VTV is mandatory to circulate.

The possible results of the technical verification can be three: pass, conditional or rejected. The latter is due to the fact that the vehicle has serious damage, detailed in the inspection report, and is considered "in violation" without the possibility of circulating on public roads.

What should I do if you are refused VTV?

If this happens, the defect(s) found in your vehicle will need to be resolved and then re-checked.

Both in CABA and in the Province of Buenos Aires, if the vehicle does not pass the technical verification, there is a period of 60 days to make the requested arrangements and go back to the same plant for free.

In the event that the deadline is exceeded, you must request an appointment, pay the full rate and perform the VTV again.

What are the reasons why you can be refused VTV?

  • Brakes. Worn brake discs or pads, loss of brake fluid, or mismatch in the parking brake.

  • Lights. The reasons for rejection can be broken, burned-out, poorly regulated or poorly disposed lights.
  • Suspension. If the suspension system of the vehicle is in poor condition, the reasons may be the wear of shock absorbers, the breakage of any of the components or the imbalance of the wheels.

  • Pollutant emissions. Vehicles that do not meet the pollutant emission standards established by environmental regulations (gases, smoke and noise) can also be rejected in the VTV.
  • Tyres. They are carefully checked on the VTV. If they are worn, broken or with some deformation, they can lead to rejection.

  • Documentation. If the vehicle documents are not complete or up to date, the VTV may not be approved.

The 8 points of your car that are controlled in the VTV

It is important that vehicle owners are aware of the requirements and deadlines for VTV in their locality. In addition, it is recommended to carry out a previous review of the car or motorcycle before the verification, to ensure that it is in good condition. A way to avoid costly repairs or even not being able to pass the VTV.

The City's technical verification controls the following elements:

1) Lights: the correct functioning of the front, rear, brake, turn signals and that there are no missing lights is checked.

2) Exhaust system: emission of gases, smoke and noise.

3) Brakes: the condition of the pads, discs, drums, brake fluid and the handbrake is checked.

4) Chassis: the general condition of the bumper, windshield, windshield wiper and chassis is checked.

5) Safety and emergency: headrests in front seats, seat belts, fire extinguishers and beacons.

6) Tires: pressure and tread check and rims.

7) Suspension system: elastic shock absorbers and suspension grille.

8) Steering system and front axle: steering box, wheels, ball joints and steering end are reviewed.

How much does VTV cost?

The cost of the procedure to perform the Vehicle Technical Verification in the City is $ 1,144.50 for private cars and $ 430 for motorcycles.

If the certificate is lost, the windshield is broken or the wafer is damaged or misplaced, it is necessary to present itself at the plant where the VTV was made, with a complaint or police exposure of its loss, and at the moment the documentation will be replaced.

In Province, for cars and other light vehicles up to 2,500 kg the current rate of the VTV is $ 3,150; for heavy vehicles over 2,500 kg it costs $ 5,670; and for motorcycles, $ 945.

According to the Misdemeanours Law No. 451, not carrying the certificate or the Wafer is equivalent to an infraction of 150 UF (UF: $ 21.40, 150 UF: $ 3,210). If the vehicle never made a check or if it is expired, the fine will amount to 600 UF ($12,840).
