The director of a nursery in Jerusalem was detained today (Thursday) for questioning on suspicion of causing the negligent death of a 5-month-old toddler earlier this week at an institution she managed. The details of the investigation indicate that the suspect ran the nursery, which had more than 10 children, without a license from the Ministry of Education.

During her interrogation, the nursery director claimed that she noticed the toddler crying and not feeling well earlier this week, so she laid him on his stomach and rocked him in the crib until he calmed down. Later, the suspect identified that the toddler was having trouble breathing and was turning blue, and called medical personnel.

During the hearing in her case at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, an acquaintance of the suspect appeared who claimed that she believed in the suspect's innocence and added that she had spoken with the parents of the deceased toddler who asked not to take action against the principal. The acquaintance even quoted the mother of the toddler, who said: "I don't regret it, if I have another child, I send it to her."

At the end of the hearing, Judge Hui Toker ordered the suspect's release under restrictive conditions, noting in her decision: "There is no claim by the police that there is suspicion of criminal activity."

Attorney Ariel Atari, who represents the nursery director, said in response: "These are the kind of cases in which the police are expected to show humanity and common sense and understand that SIDS is not a reason to harm a dedicated caregiver. This is especially true in light of the moving words of the mother of the toddler, who said that she has no complaints and that her next child will be sent to the devoted care of the very same caregiver."
