Broad achievements and agreements instead of reform at any price: the government wishes for quiet from Levin | Israel Hayom

The list of mistakes made in the way the coalition chose to advance the legal reform includes, among other things, the combination of laws with each other, the "goats" that were introduced into the laws themselves at the beginning, so that they magnified the threat to those who fear for the image of the state. Even the tone, which was a kind of declaration of war just after the establishment of the government, in the eyes of parts of the Israeli public was initially illegitimate.

But even if all the mistakes are taken together, it is difficult to compete with the hard core group of the protest against the reform. They fell in love with the protest uniforms, the slogans and the invention of well-worn slogans, along with the persecution of ministers and Knesset members everywhere. While the coalition understood the limitations of power within one seat, among that hard core there are those who are confident that they can bring the country down in borrowed grief if all their demands, including the overthrow of the government, are not met.

A democracy in which only the "right" opinions can be voiced is not a democracy. But it seems that the same devout Christian sect that has fallen in love with the religion of democracy is simply unwilling to listen, lest its raison d'être become redundant.

The fact that every government initiative encounters a wall in the form of objections has led a significant number of government ministers – and apparently even its leader – to recalculate their course. Instead of being a whale that goes ashore with legal reform, achieves its destiny and perishes, it is better to promote lateral achievements. These veteran ministers want to talk about Levin's heart and explain to him that the future of the government and its ability to execute depend on his ability to conduct himself wisely in the new situation that has been created. Instead of pushing the Judicial Appointments Committee Law again, it is worthwhile to promote measures that will stabilize Israel's economic situation, enable governance, and also try to restore quiet to the Arab street.

In this way, according to coalition ministers, the government will be able to prosper and bring results to all citizens of the country, and naturally, the reason for the protest will be lost. In this situation, the pious sect will also be required to adopt new hobbies, and quiet will return to our regions. They do not demand that Levin give up everything, but promote laws with broad consensus; Act heel to thumb, don't make big announcements. Basically, they are asking Levin to return to being the responsible adult of the right, as he was before last December.

There are those who even call on Netanyahu to remove more mines from the path with tacit consent, referring to the draft law. According to ministers, in the ultra-Orthodox sector as well, Gafni and Deri will allow the passage of the draft law along the lines proposed by former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, with vigorous but not terminal protests. In this way, the demonstrators' desire to put the ultra-Orthodox at the stake will also become obsolete.

In the time free from protests, the government can simply work. This is not about the loss of reform, it is about pragmatism and looking forward: saving what is possible from laws to reform the judicial system and managing a life-aspiring government agenda. It may look like a loss, ministers say, but it's a strategic victory.
