The 800-hectare forest borders Stockdorf to the east and Krailling, Planegg and Neuried to the south. The forest box is saved. The city and the gravel construction company have terminated the lease. 9.5 hectares of forest are now preserved.

Munich - The dispute is buried: No gravel is mined in Forst Kasten. The owner of the site, the Heilig-Geist-Spital-Stiftung München, and the gravel mining company have agreed to terminate the lease. "This is very good news for the preservation of the forest, not only for local recreation, but also for environmental protection," says Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD). There had been trouble about the project.

Gravel mining in Forst Kasten stopped: Owner finances an old people's home with the proceeds

The 800-hectare forest borders Stockdorf to the east and Krailling, Planegg and Neuried to the south and is located north of Buchendorf. Since the beginning of the 70s, gravel mining for individual plots has been put out to tender on the site. The forest is part of Munich's green belt. It is owned by the Heilig-Geist-Spital-Stiftung, which in turn is assigned to the Social Department. Among other things, the foundation uses the income from the management of the forest to finance a home for the elderly.

The city council had approved gravel mining in May 2021. Gritting his teeth. Because there was already a lease agreement, legally the politician's hands were tied. Nevertheless, resistance to the project had formed. Climate activists camped in the trees to prevent an area of 9.5 hectares from being cleared.

Gravel mining in Forst Kasten stopped: City of Munich sees changed framework conditions

As the city now announces, the framework conditions have changed in the meantime. It is now doubtful whether gravel mining can still be approved at all, which is why a continuation of the contract was no longer an option for both parties.

With the termination of the agreement, a main concern of the Greens, which has existed for more than two years, has finally been implemented, says parliamentary group leader Mona Fuchs – namely to end the gravelling of the valuable forest area and to preserve the local recreation area. "This result would not have been possible without the commitment of citizens' initiatives in the Würm Valley and environmental protection organisations. This is a joint success and I would like to thank everyone for that."
