The ailing national football player Timo Werner is still hoping for his participation in the international matches due at the end of the season. However, the 27-year-old striker from DFB-Pokal winners RB Leipzig will not be available to national coach Hansi Flick until the second European Championship test against Poland in Warsaw on Friday next week at the earliest. "It's definitely going to be very, very tight for Monday," Werner said on Thursday in Frankfurt with a view to the 1000th birthday.

The 57-time international (24 goals) is suffering from an ankle injury. In the cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt last Saturday in Berlin, Werner had to be substituted. "I'll try to make it to the second game," he said, looking ahead to the game against Poland. "I can't say any more yet, because since the weekend the pain has just been there. I'm trying to be able to play." The DFB team will play their third European Championship test against Colombia in Gelsenkirchen on 20 June. Dpa
