Is Israeli aid on the way? The Foreign Ministry is working hard to respond to requests for humanitarian assistance from Ukraine following the bombing of the dam in Kherson earlier this week. Those who initiated the move were the heads of the Israel-Ukraine Knesset Friendship Association, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuli Edelstein and MK Zeev Elkin, who sent Ukrainian President Zelensky a letter pledging Israeli assistance following the disaster that struck the country. Flooding damage in the area after the explosion led to agricultural damage and the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes.
"It is with a sense of shock and dismay that we write to you following the attack at the Kakhovka Dam on June 6. This deliberate act of Russian aggression, which has flooded cities and forced thousands to flee, should be strongly condemned by the international community. We are following developments on the ground and are aware that the destruction of the dam in Kherson will have consequences both in the short and long term," Elkin and Edelstein wrote, adding, "With this in mind, the State of Israel is ready to provide all the necessary support to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts. The State of Israel and the Knesset stand with you and the people of Ukraine at this difficult time."
Edelstein, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told Israel Hayom this morning that "the situation in Ukraine is extremely serious, the level of attacks in the region is escalating almost every day, and it seems as if the most basic laws of war are a recommendation there. Israel cannot stand idly by and must support the right and moral side. I am proud to say that following MK Elkin and myself's activity on this issue, the Foreign Ministry is now examining ways of humanitarian aid to Ukraine following the explosion of the dam in Kherson."
Elkin said, "The letter we issued is necessary in light of the explosion of the Nova Kakhova Dam and the humanitarian disaster in Ukraine. The State of Israel cannot continue to ignore the devastation that Russia's war in Ukraine is bringing on Ukrainian citizens. It is inconceivable that while Ukraine is under a savage and inhuman attack on civilian infrastructure facilities, government officials will not respond to the Ukrainian government. The State of Israel has a moral and moral responsibility to help Ukraine defend its citizens."
