Special Envoy to Lewiston, Montana
The sky is so vast that even the weather is a spectacle. Clouds run over the horizon pursued by their shadow. The sun brings herds to the hills. Thunderstorms erupt in the distance dragging a curtain of rain. Cities are rare in eastern Montana. Between the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers, the region is one of the least densely populated in the United States. The agglomerations seem to be set between heaven and earth, usually one or two streets, the post office, the grocery store and the school with its baseball field. Elevators are visible from miles away. Many are abandoned.
It is a breeding country. In the few cafes, customers keep their cowboy hats on to play billiards. TV screens are plugged into rodeo shows, or Fox News, the conservative news channel. Annual livestock sales are the main local events. Along the roads...
