This coming Shabbat, we will read in the synagogue the portion of Shelah, in which the Holy One, blessed be He, commands Moses, "Send you men, give up the land of Canaan, which I gave to the children of Israel."

Rebbe Rabbi Josiah Pinto explained in his weekly lesson that from the affair of the spies we learn that a mission that is not done with a willing and complete soul will not succeed.

Rabbi Pinto said:

We see in this week's Torah portion, the spies go to spy on the Land of Israel and bring the slander of the land badly, say harsh things about the Land of Israel. How can it be conceivable that the spies who were not simple people, but were righteous people of status who were individually chosen one by one, how do they stand and speak all the slander about the Land of Israel, how can this be understood?

So perhaps it is possible to interpret and say a great foundation that must be taken into our lives, when a person goes on someone's mission to do something, if the messenger does not have a pure and complete intention, not with an intention for the sake of Heaven, simply that the messenger will make a mistake in his mission and do it incorrectly, in a broken and distorted way. As soon as a person takes a messenger to do a number of things for him, if the dispatcher is dishonest and sends the messenger with dishonest thoughts, the messenger will surely fail in the mission and from that mission will cause the greatest damage.

But if the dispatcher said the mission correctly and his thoughts were pure and correct, it is certain that this mission will come out right, decent and good. It depends on the forwarder how he behaved and how he sent the mission.
And so we see in Abraham our forefather, when Abraham wanted to take a wife for Isaac he gave Eliezer his servant very harsh warnings, Abraham sanctified himself and sent Eliezer on a most faithful and correct mission, because once the dispatcher sends the mission correctly and well, the mission is sure to succeed. As soon as the forwarder sends incorrectly, that mission fails and causes the greatest damage and destruction.

According to this we can interpret and say, the Israelites came to Moses and asked Moses that they wanted to go to spy the Land of Israel, G-d tells Moses to "send you people" not a mission of the people of Israel because the mission of the people of Israel was flawed, their minds were not at peace with other thoughts of entering the Land of Israel, they wanted to stay in the desert where they had the manna and all the comforts. They sent emissaries incorrectly and cleanly, and this thing should certainly have failed. Therefore, G-d told Moses, "Send you" that the emissaries will be yours and not emissaries of the people of Israel, because if they are emissaries of the people of Israel, they will surely fail and destruction will result.

Every time a person sends a messenger to do a certain mission, he must try with all his might when he does the mission, which will be wholeheartedly and with purity of soul, cleanness and great merit. For if man does the mission in this way, it is certain that the mission will succeed. But if a person does the mission neither faithfully nor cleanly, that person's mission will certainly not succeed and great damage will come out of it. If so, all the destruction that befell the people of Israel came out because of the mission and the dispatchers that the Israelites sent the spies on an impure mission, which would certainly lead to failure as it finally happened.
