Many people are worried about having to compromise on accommodation and especially on culinary supplies when camping. But you just have to know how to help yourself.

Some love it, others less so – just a thin sleeping mat on the forest floor and just a tarpaulin that shields you from the starry sky. And although this all sounds very romantic, a lot can go wrong when camping. Read on to find out how best to prepare for your next trip into nature and what cool tricks will help you to be ready on all sides.

Culinary catering at the campsite

The golden rule of packing for your next camping trip is to think as minimalistically as possible. What do you really need and what is ballast that you only burden yourself with additionally? Last but not least, this motto applies to your catering. Before you stuff rows and rows of heavy cans, bulk packs of toast, snacks and sweets into your backpack, you should opt for filling foods and save extra space with one or two tricks. For example, it is a good idea to portion rice, pasta and the like and take them with you in space-saving plastic bags.

1. Camping tip: Coffee breaks in the tent

Before the first coffee in the morning, nothing works for many people. So that you don't have to take an extensive coffee set, let alone your coffee machine, with you, it is advisable to make portable coffee bags in advance and in two simple steps. All you have to do is fill a few coffee filters (depending on the desired number of cups on holiday) with one or two spoons of coffee powder and tie them with a string or a piece of dental floss. These are then only poured with hot water at the campsite and ready - the perfect start to the day for every coffee lover.

These foods are a must-have when camping

  • Breakfast: oatmeal, nuts, seeds, sweetener, dried fruits (for porridge)
  • Lunch/dinner: rice, pasta, couscous with sauces, ready-made soups, long-life bread with spreads that cannot be refrigerated
  • In between: nuts, muesli bars, dried fruit, oatmeal biscuits, fruit (e.g. apples) and vegetables (e.g. carrots)

2. Camping tip: Where's the spice?

Bringing the whole spice rack from the kitchen is a bit impractical with the camper. Nevertheless, not everything has to taste the same. To flavor your food in a variety of ways while saving space, you can fill empty tic-tac containers with salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs and spices. Alternatively, comparable jars can also be used.

3. Camping tip: pancake mix to go

If you like to eat pancakes for breakfast and don't want to miss them on a camping trip, you don't have to do without your beloved egg dish even on holiday with this simple trick. This requires a little preparatory work from home, but at the campsite you will thank yourself at the latest at your first pancake breakfast. Simply clean an empty ketchup bottle well and fill it with your homemade pancake batter. However, since this contains eggs and milk as a classic variant, you should make sure to cool it well. If you want to be on the safe side, you can also find numerous vegan alternatives online. The dough can be easily dosed out of the bottle and into the pan if necessary. This creates a tasty change from the daily porridge.

4. Camping tip: Save space in the cooler

To save space in your cooler, it is recommended to fill empty plastic bottles with drinking water and freeze them. So you have a cooling element and drinking water supply in one. In contrast to conventional ice cubes, this trick allows you to make further use of the space in the cooler occupied by ice, even after defrosting. Whether for cooking, drinking or washing, the water is still very usable.

Thermos flasks – another 2-in-1

Of course, your thermos bottle must not be forgotten when camping. Whether for tea, coffee or soup, everything stays warm for a long time. If you fill your thermos bottle with hot water before going to bed and put it in the sleeping bag, you will also have a fully functional hot water bottle for cold nights.

5. Camping tip: Cooking without a kitchen

While many campers do not set off without their multifunctional camping stove, many forget the option, namely cooking over a campfire. And although camping stoves can be used in many ways and can be used to heat cans and cook rice and pasta, you can add a fire to your diet. For example, stick bread, but also sausages and other grilled food are best prepared over the flame.
