Nuremberg/Munich – Around noon in Nuremberg, it was not yet clear where the journey was going. At first, only a few raindrops mixed between the warm rays of the sun, and it didn't look like strong thunderstorms yet. However, a look at the warning map of the German Weather Service (DWD) already showed that small thunderstorm cells are circulating throughout the region, which have it all – in some cases, the highest thunderstorm warning level was already declared by the DWD for parts of northern Bavaria. In Nuremberg itself, the time had come around 15 p.m. There was a crash for more than an hour, and in no time the streets were under water. But also in large parts of Upper Bavaria raged on Thursday (8 June) sometimes violent storms.

Violent storms in Bavaria: Thunderstorm cell discharges over Nuremberg

In Nuremberg, "several units" of the fire brigade are on the way to work through more than 200 incident sites, the fire brigade tweeted in the early evening. According to a spokesman, no injuries were initially reported to the police headquarters. In the south-east of the city and at the Plärrer, an important traffic junction, traffic lights and tram traffic were cancelled. The cause was probably a lightning strike in a power box.

Thunderstorm cells discharge over Bavaria – Kirchentag must be interrupted

Lightning also struck houses. In Cadolzburg (district of Fürth), the roof truss of a residential building was on fire.
At the Kirchentag, the open-air program had to be interrupted due to the storm. The communal quarters were opened earlier so that people could warm up and change their wet clothes, a spokeswoman said. If you had a wet tent on the campsite, you could go to a school and spend the night there. In the evening, the program should continue as planned.

Accidents after thunderstorms on Bavarian motorways – car breaks through fence

On the A7 in the direction of Füssen, two accidents occurred in the evening near Altenstadt due to aquaplaning in heavy rain. As the police in Kempten announced, a 69-year-old came off the road with his car. The car slammed into several signs, broke through a fence and came to a stop on a grass strip. The driver and passenger were uninjured. A little later, a 32-year-old woman lost control of her car, which ran over a guardrail and overturned. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"Never experienced before" – hail transforms place in Bavaria into hail landscape

North of Nuremberg, in Marktheidenfeld, up to 60 litres of rain per square metre fell in a very short time. Residents spoke of an event that they had "never experienced before". Due to the heavy rain, numerous cellars in Tiefenthal were filled at the same time. The hail turned the streets into an icy landscape. According to the report, the fire brigade had to trigger a major alarm and was busy with over 300 firefighters until late into the night with the emptying of the cellars and the clearing of the street.

Storm cells also discharged in Munich. Huge amounts of hail fell in a very short time, and roads then resembled a winter landscape. But the thunderstorm also tore leaves from the trees, which then collected on the street.
