A 6-year-old boy found a gun and shot his 1-year-old brother twice Wednesday, Detroit, Michigan police said in what they called an all-too-common occurrence.

The younger boy, who was wounded in the cheek and shoulder, survived, Detroit Deputy Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said.

"Here we are again," Fitzgerald said. "We're here too often talking about protecting guns."

The younger brother was jumping on an inflatable trampoline when the 6-year-old found a semiautomatic firearm and shot him at about 7:40 p.m., Fitzgerald said.

At the time of the shooting, the mother was at a relative's home and the father was in the backyard with other children and an uncle working on a fence, he said.

Police said Wednesday that there were no arrests and that investigators will present their findings to the Wayne County District Attorney's Office for consideration.

Police are investigating a shooting involving a 6-year-old boy and his 1-year-old brother in Detroit.

"We're very, very fortunate that that child is still with us," Fitzgerald said.

This April, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, signed into law a bill requiring that guarded or unguarded firearms be kept locked up if a child is believed to be present.

Whitmer signed the law two months after a gunman killed three people at Michigan State University, and about 16 months after a 15-year-old high school student killed four people at Oxford High School. His office referred to both shootings when he signed this bill and others related to guns.

So far in 2023, there have been at least 128 unintentional shootings by children in the United States, according to a database by Everytown for Gun Safety, an advocacy group calling for stricter gun laws. 54 of these incidents have been fatal.
