Several explosions occurred on a construction site in Hamburg's Hafencity. The fire brigade is in large-scale operation and warns the population.
Hamburg – On Friday afternoon, a fire broke out in HafenCity, causing a thick cloud of smoke over the Überseeallee area. Several explosions could be heard for miles.
The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance agrees with the warning and asks residents to avoid the area and to keep windows and doors closed. The warning app Katwarn also issued a warning to the population to draw attention to the situation.
Major fire in Hamburg's Hafencity
According to a police spokesman, the burning building is located on a construction site in Überseequartier. The emergency services were alerted at 16:52 p.m. to Überseeallee. Pictures show the roof of a multi-storey building on fire and dense, dark smoke rising into the air.
In order to curb the development of smoke gases, the police ask the population to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area as far as possible. Warning apps have also alerted the population.
